The forerunner of today's Legal & General Group was The Legal & General Life Assurance Society. The Group, established in 1836, is one of the UK's leading financial services companies and one of the most well-known insurers.

The first life policy was issued on 14 October 1836. It is now one of the UKs top 50 companies in the FTSE 100 Index, with over 5.75 million customers for its life assurance, pensions, investments and general insurance plans.

The Society opened its doors for business on 19 September 1836, operating from the temporary premises taken on lease at 10 Chancery Lane. Meanwhile, some land nearby had been chosen for the building of a permanent office at 10-12 Fleet Street. This location, for the next 100 years or so, was to become famous as the site of the Societys chief administrative headquarters.

At at 30 June 2007, The Legal & General Group is responsible for investing over £257 billion worldwide on behalf of investors, policyholders and institutions. It has offices in the USA, France, the Netherlands and Germany, as well as the UK.
